Assemble candidate Shockat Adam wins Leicester South election amid ‘Independents Day’ landslide

Independent candidate Shockat Adam has won the seat of Leicester South in the UK General Election after a campaign powered by local Assemblies, as supported by grassroots organisation Assemble. Assemble is part of the Umbrella network, along with Just Stop Oil and Youth Demand

Assemblies are open meetings where the local communities decide on policies. Assemble is a grassroots group who are organising, supporting, and funding Assemblies across the country which will feed into a ‘House of the People’, set to be launched 17th July 2024. The ‘House of the People’ is a new legislative body which will be poised to replace the House of Lords.

Yaz Ashmawi, 29 year-old physicist and spokesperson for Assemble, said:

“The landslide of independents clearly shows that the rules are changing for good. Assemblies are home to the voices of people locked out of the system. Most politicians just work for themselves and lobbyists, and we’re not in the running. No more.”

“A House of the People would have a real democratic mandate, and it could rapidly tackle the huge problems that our fake democracy has failed to address. We can’t end genocide, inequality, or the climate crisis with the system we have now, so the people must decide.”

Adam was also endorsed by Collective, a network of progressive candidates working together across the country, which also included Jeremy Corbyn, the newly elected (as an independent candidate) MP for Islington South. Another independent Collective candidate, Leanne Mohamad, came within 600 votes of defeating Labour’s Wes Streeting. A total of five independent candidates have been elected across the UK.

On Saturday 6th July, Assemble will be working with Youth Demand and Health Workers for Palestine to host an Assembly for Palestine in St. James’s Park in London, immediately after the mass march organised by Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
