Assemble statement on the General Election results

Labour have won a majority, but they are the same old lizards in different ties. They work for themselves, they work for corporations, they work for lobbyists. They don’t work for us. They don’t represent us.

The Conservatives have inflicted hideous damage to our country, but Starmer’s remedy will be like treating a gunshot wound with cheap veneers – before running off with the patient’s wallet, setting fire to their house, and privatising their dog.

Assemble endorsed 28 independent candidates in the general election, training and funding local people to create community-driven manifestos that the candidates ran on. This tactic of holding freely accessible meetings where the local communities create the policies is a game-changing way of doing politics – and it was just the start.

More than 50 local Assemblies will be happening on a monthly basis after the election, and their outcomes will be fed into the House of the People, which launches on August 3rd. The House of the People is a new institution that will meet regularly to deliberate on the outcomes of local assemblies and leverage their demands. The free and open democratic body will have a constantly changing membership that is demographically representative of the United Kingdom.

A free, uncorrupted and unencumbered institution like the House of the People can create the sort of logical, proportionate and effective solutions to the enormous crises we are facing – genocide, inequality and climate collapse. This body will rival the Government and in time, seeks to replace the House of Lords.

Politics is broken – but you are the fix. Come to the House of the People launch event on the 3rd August, and join your local assembly:
