The first sitting of the House of the People is being held in London from the 20th July to the 22nd July 2025. Members of the public and the press are invited to attend on any of the days to witness and report on the groundbreaking democratic process. The event is being organised by Assemble. [1]
The event will be the first of its kind, as a grassroots national People’s Assembly that serves to unite local Assemblies held across the UK. It is being held in a historical venue in Central London.
Those interests in attending on any of the days (20th – 22nd July) should email [email protected] with name and affiliations (if any) to register and receive venue details. Registrations are limited.

In the past year 3,000 local people have come together in 35 neighbourhoods across 75 Local Assemblies to create Local Charters – which are agreed lists of 5 key issues to tackle. The topics on these Local Charters can range from local issues to national ones, without restriction.
The job for the House of the People is to carefully review all of these Local Charters and create a National Charter to represent them, with 5 key national issues for the Government to address and guidance on how to do it.
It’s being proposed that a national People’s Assembly with participants regularly selected by a democratic lottery (like the House of the People) should replace the House of Lords to better hold the Commons to account and create fairer legislation.
Spokesperson Bertie Coyle said today:
“Democracy is the pride of Britain, but right now it’s super screwed up. Corrupt Keir and his Oligarch friends in the Lords are case in point. The House of the People will see 100 ordinary citizens create a genuine democratic mandate – that’s more like it.”
“It’s a new political institution where all decisions come from the grassroots. No strings attached. The people of Britain are wonderful, it’s about time we trusted them.”

A public-led institution like a House of the People will produce fairer, more effective, and more democratic outcomes than the existing parliamentary system, which is not fit for purpose. The recent election saw the lowest turnout and vote count for two decades, yet produced a prime minister with the strongest majority. Polls show that most British people are in favour of replacing the House of Lords, with a permanent rolling citizens’ assembly as the favourite alternative. [2] [3]

[1] Assemble is part of the Umbrella movement which includes Just Stop Oil and Youth Demand. The group endorsed 26 independent candidates in the general election, including Shockat Adam and Andrew Feinstein.
The group is building a alternative home for the voice of the country, by inviting members of the public from all backgrounds and places to carefully consider the evidence and reach decisions on the biggest issues of our time, including the UK’s approach to the climate crisis, genocide, and poverty.
