Communications Officer

• Fully-time  - This role is part-time, 40 hours a week at Living Wage (£13.45, or £14.80 if London-based)
• From time to time, some of those working hours will be allocated to hosting events and running evening meetings, but broadly the work is normal working hours.
• 3 month fixed contract - This role is for 3 months, but with potential for extension, subject to funding.
• Remote with some travel - You can work remotely from anywhere in the UK, with potential for one-off (subsidised) travel to London for training.

We're looking for a new core team member to build relationships that grow Assemble and the House of the People. That means reaching out to experts, journalists, campaigners, and people with a public platform, and turning cold contacts into real relationships: people who'll speak at an event or talk, sign the Charter, cover the story, or throw their weight behind the second sitting.

We're not asking you to write lots of copy. You'll  have templates and messaging guidance as a starting point, and we welcome your input on what good outreach and comms looks like — you'll be the one holding the actual conversations. What we need most is someone who's good at finding the right person, connecting with them in a way that's friendly and compelling, and following up until you get an answer — and keeping track of all communications so nothing falls through the cracks.

A lot of this work is cold outreach to people who don't know us yet. Some of it is maintaining relationships with people who do. Either way, you're often the voice of Assemble to the outside world — the person holding the conversation when someone wants to know more about who we are and what we're building. We're looking for someone with good judgement and experience in managing these kinds of conversations — knowing when to push, when to wait, and when to bring the team in before something goes out.

The House of the People is a permanent Citizens Assembly to allow anyone in the UK the chance to make important decisions about the big problems we're facing.

Almost one hundred members served in its first sitting, a true cross-section of the public, chosen by democratic lottery. For three days, people talked through the big problems we face and how to fix them. They listened to experts — academics, historians, scientists — and to the voices of thousands of local people in Assemblies all across the UK.

Together they drafted the People's Charter, which calls power to tax wealth not work, demands we slash political corruption and end complicity in genocide. It puts forward a law above all laws — a future generations act — to choose life over GDP and calls for councils to reclaim our empty spaces for the community.

Supporters can go online to add their name to the Charter, print out flyers & posters and use a tool to quickly send a letter or email to their MP.

In November of this year, the second sitting of the House of the People is being convened by Assemble & the Odyssean Institute to address how Artificial Intelligence is governed for current and future generations in the UK. A new snapshot of the public is undertaking an education phase in advance to understand all the complex ways AI poses risks, and will hear from the contributions of many local communities in assemblies as part of the three day sitting in Manchester at the People’s History Museum.

• Reach out to experts, notable figures and potential supporters — inviting them to speak, sign the Charter, or back the second sitting.
• Liaise with confirmed speakers and contributors, from invite through to briefing them ahead of the event.
• Set up interviews with media, journalists and podcasts.
• Build and maintain relationships with partner organisations over time — this is ongoing, not one-off asks.

• Manage our outward-facing inbox — responding to enquiries and flagging what needs a team decision.
• Track who's been contacted, what was agreed, and what's outstanding.
• Handle press releases and public statements when needed, working from agreed messaging.
• Feed back what's landing to the team to inform their work.

We're looking for someone with:

• Confidence in your communication. You're comfortable and experienced in reaching out to people you don't know, through emails, calls and other outreach.
• A track record of building and maintaining relationships with external contacts or partner organisations over time.
• Good judgement and experience managing these kinds of conversations — knowing when to push, when to wait, and when to bring the team in before something goes out.
• Strong organisational skills to keep track of multiple conversations and outstanding asks at once.
• A genuine belief in the Assemble and the House of the People, and confidence to represent both.
