Regional Mobiliser & Organiser

• Part-time  - This role is part-time, 20 hours a week at Living Wage (£13.45).
• From time to time, some of those working hours will be allocated to hosting events and running evening meetings, but broadly the work is normal working hours.
• 3 month fixed contract - This role is for 3 months, but with potential for extension, subject to funding.
• Remote with some travel - You can work remotely from anywhere in the UK, with potential for one-off (subsidised) travel to London for training.
• Based in the following locations: Middlesbrough, Cardiff, Nottingham, Manchester, Brighton & Hove, Belfast, Glasgow
  

As a Regional Mobiliser & Organiser, you'll help local people in your region come together to plan and run a local, democratic People’s Assembly to have a say on how Artificial Intelligence is governed. These should aim to bring ~100 people together for a couple of hours in October, to deliberate in facilitated small groups. This will feed into a national Citizens’ Assembly— the second sitting of the House of the People — which will decide on AI governance for current and future generations.

You’ll  work with Assemble to find and book the right location for an Assembly, speak to existing campaign groups on the ground, recruit and engage volunteers to build a small team and help form a long-lasting local group which can continue to organise and campaign into the future.

You'll get trained up to deliver trainings to your team: on how to organise assemblies, how to facilitate small groups and how to reach out to people in the community to let them know what’s happening.

The Assemble Mobilisation team is small and supportive. Each regional mobiliser run their own area, and is supported by  the National Mobilisation Coordinator who oversees the project. The whole team meets weekly to share updates and support each other.

This is an opportunity to help provide the public oversight on AI development that so many are crying out for: from researchers, politicians, and everyday people, to the technology companies themselves — there are many who plan on campaigning on the recommendations of the House and build a broad, powerful social movement to make change.

The House of the People is a permanent Citizens Assembly to allow anyone in the UK the chance to make important decisions about the big problems we're facing.

Almost one hundred members served in its first sitting, a true cross-section of the public, chosen by democratic lottery. For three days, people talked through the big problems we face and how to fix them. They listened to experts — academics, historians, scientists — and to the voices of thousands of local people in Assemblies all across the UK.

Together they drafted the People's Charter, which calls power to tax wealth not work, demands we slash political corruption and end complicity in genocide. It puts forward a law above all laws — a future generations act — to choose life over GDP and calls for councils to reclaim our empty spaces for the community.

Supporters can go online to add their name to the Charter, print out flyers & posters and use a tool to quickly send a letter or email to their MP.

In November of this year, the second sitting of the House of the People is being convened by Assemble & the Odyssean Institute to address how Artificial Intelligence is governed for current and future generations in the UK. A new snapshot of the public is undertaking an education phase in advance to understand all the complex ways AI poses risks, and will hear from the contributions of many local communities in assemblies as part of the three day sitting in Manchester at the People’s History Museum.

• Finding and booking a suitable venue, within an agreed budget
• Recruiting a small team of local volunteers
• Coordinating your volunteer team's outreach to maximise engagement and secure strong attendance
• Reaching out to existing campaign groups and community networks in your region
• Delivering training to your volunteer team on facilitation and outreach, after being trained yourself
• Helping your local group continue organising beyond the assembly itself
• Promoting the People's Charter within your community
• Taking part in weekly team check-ins with the other regional mobilisers

We're looking for someone with:

• A genuine desire to upgrade democracy .You care about ensuring everyday people to have a say in the decisions which affect them, and you believe that democracy should not be just something that happens once every five years.
• Confident and empathetic communication skills. You don't have to be loud or prominent, but you're willing to speak up assuredly in new and unfamiliar public situations, and can engage and inspire a range of people, from local residents to campaign leaders, always listening as much as persuading.
• Organising experience. You've planned events, coordinated groups, led teams and have brought people together to do something meaningful.
• Teamwork skills. You’re happy to work within the Assemble's shared strategy and collaborate well with a wide range of people involved in delivering it — from the core team shaping national decisions to volunteers dealing with local group frictions day to day.
• Flexibility.You can adapt to different communities and colleagues, be spontaneous and responsive when you need to be.
